Key Moments: Newcastle United

By James Hilsum • 21 October 2018

Beram Kayal’s goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win for Brighton & Hove Albion over Newcastle United on Saturday. Here are the five key moments that entailed.

Perez’s Early Chance

Ayoze Perez had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in Newcastle’s favour after just five minutes when he took advantage of a defensive lapse of concentration, but was denied thanks to Maty Ryan’s first of many fine saves throughout the game.

Murray’s Injury

There was a nervous moment for everyone inside the stadium when Glenn Murray went down after a clash of heads with Federico Fernandez in the 15th minute. After a lengthy stoppage in play, the Seagulls frontman was stretchered off and good news later filtered through that he was awake in hospital after being taken in for a precautionary scan.

Kayal’s Vital Touch

Kayal scored what proved to be the only decisive goal of the game, as Jose Izquierdo’s strike took a deflection off the Israeli before going past Martin Dubravka. It was the midfielder’s first Premier League goal and gave Albion a slender lead, which they protected magnificently for the remainder of the game.

Ryan Denies Shelvey

Newcastle sustained spells of pressure on the Albion goal throughout the game and Ryan was called into action to brilliantly keep out Jonjo Shelvey’s deflected free kick with 15 minutes remaining. It kept Brighton’s narrow lead intact heading into the final stages of the game.

Bissouma’s Late Opportunity

Yves Bissouma was introduced for the final ten minutes of the contest and he had an opportunity to put the result beyond all doubt in the dying moments of the game, but he fired wide of the near post.
