Williams: City Punished Our Mistakes

By James Hilsum • 22 October 2018

Brighton & Hove Albion women’s first-team defender Victoria Williams highlighted how Manchester City ruthlessly capitalised on their mistakes, following a 6-0 defeat to Nick Cushing’s side.

Williams believes the team will take plenty from the contest against one of the main title challengers this season.

She said, “I’m disappointed, as 6-0 is a big defeat on paper, but we’ll learn some important lessons again and it’s about improving our work at both ends of the pitch.

“We had some good chances in the second half and we could’ve got ourselves back into the game, but we got punished a few times on the counter-attack.

“In the same breath we’ve got to be realistic and know that Manchester City are an established team in this league and have got a wealth of international experience.

“We’ve got to take positives from within the game and there are plenty of them. We just have to move on. We can’t dwell on the result; we’ve come up against one of the best teams in Europe who were in the Champions League semi-finals last season.”

The defender explained how there was still plenty of belief to get back into the contest at the break with the score at 2-0, and looked ahead to next Sunday’s crucial match against Yeovil Town.

“We went in at half time with the attitude that we could still get something out of this game, so it was disappointing that we conceded four in the second half.

“We didn’t come out with the mentality of damage limitation, we wanted to get back into it. They’ve got some quality players and if you make small errors, they’ve got the calibre of players to punish you for them.

“The Yeovil game is a chance for us to bounce back. I wish it was in midweek, and the next game can’t come soon enough for us, so we’ll be ready and raring to go for the game.”
