Albion's top scorer is looking forward to playing against one of his former clubs with European football up for grabs.

Danny Welbeck has called for the fans to back the team loudly in Sunday’s final game of the season at home to Manchester United and roar the players into Europe.

“It's an exciting time, and exciting game,” said Danny, who was named Players’ Player of the Season on Tuesday. “I'm sure the Amex is going to be on fire. We're going to need every single one of them fans behind us on Sunday.

“I'm issuing a rallying call for all of the fans to make it an incredible day and hopefully it's one that we can look back on with history and say ‘That was one of the best days.’

“It's a massive game for all the players, for the whole club and the fans. We know how much it means to everybody, so I think we've got to focus on ourselves, try and get them three points and put us in the best position to see where we can finish the season off. We're really looking forward to it.”

Danny has said in the past that he has played against United often enough for the games not to seem special any longer, but he agrees that the Red Devils do seem to keep cropping up at key moments for Albion.

“Yes, and it seems like we played United a couple of times on the last day before as well. They've performed really well in the second part of the season and we know the quality they've always possessed with the players. It's going to be a really difficult game, but one that we are looking forward to and we should really cherish.”

Danny also spoke of his pride at being recognised by his fellow professionals as their Players’ Player of the Season in a campaign when he became Albion's all-time top scorer in the top-flight.

“It’s a special one,” he said. “It's something that I'm really proud of, especially when it's one of the awards that's given to you by the players for the work this season.

“Last season was a good season too and obviously I knew that I was in good shape going into the season, feeling fit, feeling strong and I didn't feel like I'm dropping off.

“Hopefully again next season I can replicate what I did this season. But it's nice to be recognised and it puts me in good stead and obviously it'll be nice to go into pre-season and to be ready to go again. But first we’ve got a little game on the weekend!”
