We are sad to learn of the passing of former Albion winger Gerry Fell at the age of 74.
Gerry played for the club between 1974 and 1977, making 91 appearances and scoring 20 goals.
Gerry’s career started at Stamford before he signed for another non-league club Long Eaton United. His manager at the latter was Brian Daykin, who would later become assistant manager to Peter Taylor at Albion.
Daykin convinced Taylor to give Fell a trial, which would prove successful, and the then 23-year-old left his job as a bank clerk in Nottinghamshire to sign professionally at the Goldstone in November 1974. A former schoolboy 800m champion, Gerry's pace on the wing proved highly effective.
Gerry was a part of the Albion team that won promotion from the third division in the 1976/77 season, scoring four goals in 23 league appearances.
He departed in 1977 and joined Southend United before spells with Torquay United, York City and Whitehawk, where he won the Sussex County League title in 1984. He also captained the Sussex representative team.
The club would like to pass on their sincere condolences to Gerry’s family and friends at this sad time.
