Albion secured their first win of the Premier League 2 season.

Goals from Adam Brett, Tytler Silsby and substitute Younes Ibrahim gave Albion men’s under-21s their first Premier League 2 victory of the season, beating winless Leicester City at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

Brett gave Albion the lead against the run of play eight minutes before half time, Silsby made it 2-0 after 54 minutes and Ibrahim sealed the points with a memorable individual goal.

And one day the match may also be remembered as the first time the Ferdinand brothers, goalkeeper Lorenz and defender Tate, lined up together for Albion in a competitive match.

But for most of the first half Albion had a battle on their hands. Leicester’s first team might have fallen down to League One, but their under-21s were an impressive outfit in the opening 45 minutes and took the game to Shannon Ruth’s side from the kick-off.

Albion had a narrow escape after just four minutes when Brett’s backpass found only Leicester striker Joshua King. He went round Lorenz Ferdinand and hit the ball towards what he must have thought would be an empty net only for Ben Barclay to slide in and clear off the goalline.

Then a clever chip from Leicester skipper Tommy Neale sent his midfield partner William Lawrence through, but Albion captain Callum Mackley had been alive to the danger and got his body between opponent and goal.

Shane Nti had Albion’s first shot at goal, a volley from Tyler Silsby’s cross, but Leicester goalkeeper Freddie Marson got down well to his left to save. Their next effort, from Sean Keogh after a cross from left by Kofi Shaw, was blocked by the combined efforts of two Leicester defenders.

And after 37 minutes, they were ahead. A long forward ball got the better of Leicester defender Michael Toko, presenting it to George Munday. Albion’s number nine cleverly backheeled it to Brett, who angled a powerful left-foot shot past Marson.

Leicester had a great chance to level just before the interval. Winger Lorenz Hutchinson sent in a low shot that Lorenz Ferdinand did well to parry, but with King ready to pounce, brother Tate produced a well-timed block. And Albion took full advantage of that let-off.

Brett nearly doubled Albion’s lead in the second minute of the second half. He turned past Toko and shot, but the defender recovered just enough to get a touch on the ball, which clipped the crossbar.

But Albion were soon 2-0 up. Ibrahim and Munday worked the ball in from the right, Brett saw his shot blocked, and Silsby made no mistake, knocking the loose ball past Marson.

Leicester’s early dominance was now a thing of the past. Kofi Shaw blasted just over the bar from long range, Munday sent Marson sprawling and Brett nodded Keogh’s cross just wide. Shaw then went for glory with teammates better placed.

Albion were well worth a third and Ibrahim scored it in some style after 71 minutes. The ball broke to him in midfield and he ran on and on, past defender after defender, before hitting a low left-foot shot back across Marson and into the far corner.

Valentin Joseph was inches from a fourth when he threw himself at Zachary Brennan’s header across goal but could not quite make contact.
