Lewis Dunk has revealed Albion's players have paid for a refund of match tickets and arranged special gifts for the 407 supporters making the trip to Tromsø for the club's UEFA Conference League play-off clash on Thursday night.
The Albion captain confirmed the squad had come together to refund fans' tickets and provide scarves and t-shirts for supporters travelling to northern Norway for Albion's first competitive fixture of the new season.
Albion's away following face a lengthy journey to the Arctic Circle, with supporters only discovering their destination after the play-off draw and then having to make last-minute travel arrangements.
Speaking ahead of the match, Lewis said the players wanted to recognise the commitment shown by those making the trip.
“The fans didn't know where they were going until the last minute. It's a long trip for the them, last minute to organise.
“We thought we want to start the season off well for the fans and make a gesture by refunding their tickets as a group.”
Lewis added that the squad hoped the gesture would help strengthen the bond between players and supporters ahead of another significant European campaign.
“Hopefully the fans appreciate this gesture from the players and it's a good start to a good season with them and we can all enjoy it along the way.”
The skipper’s comments underline the appreciation within the dressing room for the supporters who continue to follow the team across the continent.
Supporters will receive their refund in the days after the game.
