Cup upset both at home and in France are the headlines for this week's loan report.
The winners of the weekend include James Beadle, who played in goal as Birmingham City squeezed past League One Cambridge United to reach the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
There was also Facundo Buonanotte, who started in Chelsea’s 5-1 demolition of Charlton Athletic, with the Argentinian grabbing an assist in what was a battle between two former Albion coaches in Liam Rosenior and Nathan Jones.
On the flipside there was Marseille, Matt O’Riley and Roberto De Zerbi. They faced PSG in Kuwait in the Trophée des Champions final – a Charity Shield style match where the Ligue 1 winner faces the Coupe de France winner, although as PSG won a league and cup double last season the opponent defaulted to league runners-up Marseille.
De Zerbi’s men led 2-1 late on, but Champions League holders PSG scored in the last minute to take the game to penalties. O’Riley was substituted on to take a penalty, but saw his spot kick saved by man of the match Lucas Chevalier, as PSG went onto win the shootout 4-1. De Zerbi said after the game, “I have never cried after a defeat and today I cried when I got back to the dressing room.”
It wasn't a debut to remember for Eiran Cashin as he started his first game for Blackburn Rovers. The defender played for 75 minutes before being withdrawn, as Rovers were beaten 4-3 on penalties by Hull City after a goalless draw.
Malick Yalcouye didn't have an enjoyable afternoon either. Having started on the bench for Swansea, the midfielder was brought on in the 83rd minute with the score at 1-1 against West Brom. Extra-time saw both teams score again to take it to penalties, with Yalcouye missing his spot-kick as the Swans were knocked out.
In domestic French action, Ibrahim Osman played the full game as Auxerre were beaten 2-0 by Stade Brestois.
Staying on the continent, Evan Ferguson had to be withdrawn with a back injury after 39 minutes for Roma as they beat Sassuolo 2-0 in Serie A. His manager Gian Piero Gasperini played down the seriousness of the injury after the game though and hopes to see the Irishman back in action in ‘days’.
Returning to more familiar territory, Amario Cozier-Duberry's Bolton were beaten 3-1 by Peterborough United, although the Trotters still occupy the final play-off place despite a run of just one win in six in League One.
Carl Rushworth was an unused substitute for Coventry City as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Stoke City.
