Royals climb out of relegation zone for first time this season.

Mark O’Mahony and Kamari Doyle enjoyed their first win as Reading players when they beat Port Vale 1-0 in League One on Saturday.

They will be aiming to back up that result on Tuesday night as they head to Swindon Town in the Vertu Trophy.

Also in the third tier, Amario Cozier-Duberry played in Bolton Wanderers’ 1-1 draw at Blackpool, while Caylan Vickers started in Barnsley’s 3-1 win over Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town – Albion's Carabao Cup opponents have now won four of their opening six league games.

It was a frustrating weekend for Carl Rushworth as Coventry City twice threw away a lead to draw 2-2 at Oxford United, although it was a slightly more enjoyable Saturday for Malick Yalcouye as Swansea claimed a 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday. The Swans have started the season well, picking up seven points from their first four games.

James Beadle and Eiran Cashin were unused substitutes in Birmingham City’s 2-0 defeat at Leicester City.

In non-league, Matthew Hayden’s Havant & Waterlooville were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup in the first qualifying round, when they were beaten 1-0 by Chichester City.

Heading into Europe, Evan Ferguson played his part in Roma’s away win at Pisa, teeing up Matias Soule to score the only goal of the game after 55 minutes. In France, Ibrahim Osman started in Auxerre’s 1-0 defeat at Nantes while Yoon Doyoung an unused substitute in Excelsior’s 1-0 win over FC Twente in the Eredivisie – their first of the season.
