Fabian Hurzeler says Mats Wieffer has the ‘whole package’ to play in one of the most important positions in his team.
Wieffer scored his first Premier League goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw against West Ham and impressed as the deep-lying midfielder before going off shortly afterwards. The head coach hopes he will be fit for Friday’s home game against Brentford.
“Nowadays you call it the holding six and I think that this is one of the most important positions in our team,” said Hurzeler. “He is very good in possession; he has good passing and a good understanding of the game. Out of possession he is very athletic.
“He is a fast and tall player, so he has the whole package to be a top, top player in the Premier League.”
Hurzeler is not surprised it has taken Wieffer time to get up to speed in the Premier League. The Dutch international also had a spell on the sidelines with injury at the start of the season.

“He needed a little bit of time to adapt to the intensity and to the speed of everything as it is different to the league he played before, but he was always there in training and he always tried to improve,” added Hurzeler.
“He always tried to listen and did a lot of individual training. He has this intrinsic motivation inside him which is very positive. Now we will help him to get more integrated into the team and hopefully he stays resilient and avoids any further injury.”
