Fabian Hurzeler believes that Danny Welbeck can achieve anything he’d like in his career, after the striker triggered an option to extend his contract until summer 2027.

The 35-year-old joined us in October 2020 and has since made 191 appearances in all competitions, scoring 48 goals and assisting 17 times.

Danny has plenty to aim for going forward. Not only is he just 13 goals short of joining the 100 Premier League goals club, his form will have no doubt attracted the attention of England boss Thomas Tuchel ahead of this summer’s World Cup.

“I think another German has to make the decision about that!” Hurzeler said of Welbeck’s chances of being called up by England. “All I can say is that he’s definitely a very important player for us and he adds a huge value for every team, especially when it comes to a World Cup squad where it's about togetherness, where it's about being a group.

“He's just a great connector and I think he definitely deserves to be there, but in the end they'll make the decisions.

“I think everything's possible with characters like Danny. In each of the last two seasons he has scored ten goals in the Premier League, he was never able to do this before. It's because he's playing more minutes and that’s because he has unbelievably good fitness. We have a really good medical department and they work together quite closely with Danny.

“With these types of characters, everything's possible. They're top professionals, they are leaders on and off the pitch. They are great role models for all the young players. So let's see what is possible with them.

“We are very happy that he's in our team. Not only as a great football player, but he’s a great person especially. He's a great connector. Every coach would be happy to have a player like him in their team.”
