Diego Gomez has been delighted with the influx of Paraguayans making the step to play in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old signed for us from Inter Miami, joining up with international teammate Julio Enciso.
Diego is one of three Paraguayans to have made the move to England’s top-flight in the last year, alongside Manchester United’s Diego Leon and Wolves’ Enso Gonzalez.
“We are strong, us Paraguayans, aren’t we? We have this Guarani fighting spirit which people always remember Paraguayans for. Football is changing a lot and there are more opportunities for young players.
"Miguel Almiron was an example for us and opened a lot of doors here in the Premier League. He did a lot at Newcastle," Gomez said.

“I think he was a great example for us boys who were always dreaming of playing in a top league, in the Premier League.
“I was excited when I knew the club were interested in me because I knew Brighton had had a lot of Latin players. For this reason I really liked the club.
“When I got here, Julio was here and he helped me a lot. Pervis [Estupinan] always helped a lot with the language, always translating. I knew Julio really well because we had 14 years together at Libertad.
“We were team-mates and had always been good friends from a really young age. For me, Libertad are one of the best clubs for how they prepare you to make this step and go to play for big clubs.

“You have a boy like Diego Leon who goes to Manchester United, who is 18 and the physique he has is like he is 25. They are preparing a lot of players in Paraguay."
Paraguay are within touching distance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, with Diego keen to bring joy to his country.

“We are in very good shape. Hopefully if God wishes, the national team will qualify for the World Cup. That is what we want. The atmosphere is very good in Paraguay at the moment.
“The best things is always to see our country we all love on a high and the people deserve that as well, because we know that people are suffering there.”
