Midfielder's second-half strike makes it a perfect pre-season preparation

Albion will go into the serious action on Thursday in Tromso having won all their pre-season games.

They completed the double over Italian opposition in the Amex sunshine on Saturday when Jack Hinshelwood scored in a 1-0 win against Bologna.

It should have been more as Fabian Hurzeler’s side created several chances after noticeably upping their intensity level in the second half.

With the exception of the injured Yankuba Minteh, Hurzeler named the same starting XI as last week’s 3-0 win over AS Roma.

They had the better chances in a fairly low-key first period.

Georginio Rutter stung Lukasz Skorupski’s palms early on and the Roma keeper cleared with his fists when Mats Wieffer met Maxim De Cuyper’s corner with an unmarked header at the far post.

The best chance before the break came when Olivier Boscagli chipped a lovely pass to Hinshelwood and his volley was parried away by Skorupski, but he should have scored.

Bart Verbruggen made his only save of note early in the second half from Nicolo Cambiaghi’s volley before Albion broke the deadlock in the 58th minute.

Rutter deserves a lot of praise for a barnstorming run to the line. Bologna cleared his ball across the face of goal to Wieffer on the edge of the box and his goalbound shot was flicked home by Hinshelwood.

The midfielder should have scored a second but blazed over and by then Hurzeler had rung the changes.

One of the substitutes, Babis Kostoulas, forced a good save from Skorupski in the closing stages as Albion finished pre-season with a 100% record.
