Albion Women head coach Arturo Ruiz says his team will head into tomorrow’s game at Tottenham Hotspur with full confidence following an upturn in results in recent weeks.

The Seagulls head to the capital on the back of two successive WSL victories, against West Ham [3-0] and Crystal Palace [2-1], likewise a thumping 6-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Players’ Cup.

Tottenham, too, are a team on the rise and come into the game sitting fourth in the WSL table, on the back of a 4-1 win at Birmingham City last weekend, but Ruiz is confident his side can continue their momentum as they head to the BetWright Stadium for a 2pm kick-off.

“Sunday is a big game, a very big opportunity for us, and we feel very motivated and very calm about doing our best and giving 100 per cent for the team,” he said. “We are in a very good moment; we are working at a very good rhythm, a very good pace, so I’m very happy.

“We have already played our opponent this season [a 1-0 home defeat in the Players’ Cup], so we know them well, we know the patterns. They have won their last two games, against Bristol City and Birmingham, by representing their identity and getting two very good results.

“They also have a very good coach. I respect him and their team 100 per cent, but we are facing them with our best energy and very good momentum. I am looking forward to watching my team and I believe we will produce a very good game.”

Having only arrived in Sussex from Real Sociedad at the end of August, Ruiz’s imprint on the team is now evident, and he says the backing of the club has been key with results not always forthcoming in the early weeks of his tenure.

“I’ve felt the same support from the club every single day, no matter the result, because we’ve only been together for two months,” he added. “That is no time in football and, in that time, when you have had a lot of games, you don’t have time to build the way you would like to build.

“At the beginning of the project, it’s not about the results, it’s more about what we are building, the connections and the relationships. That is where I put the focus in the first weeks.

“In high performance, yes it is all about results, but we’ve also had some very good performances before winning these games. But we are all on the same page, we are all on the same path and right now we are in a very good position.

“We are super strong in our clarity, in having a solid dressing room, and the club has been excellent in understanding everything and supporting me in the best possible way.”

Albion’s recent WSL wins have both come at home, but with the side yet to register a league victory on their travels, Ruiz has stressed the importance of picking up points away from Sussex.

“We want to get more points away, but in this league we know how difficult it is to play away,” he added. “We feel super strong at home now, after these victories and these performances, but we need to finish building our ideas, finish building our base and our principles, and that will, of course, help us in winning points and games away from home in the WSL.”
