Adam Webster says Albion aren’t going to be knocked off their stride by the defeat to Manchester City, as they gear up for a trip to Southampton this evening.
City beat Albion 5-0 at the Amex on Saturday but defender Webster offered a sense of perspective as he assessed the result.
“You can’t get too disheartened by it, City are one of the best teams in the world – ten days before they beat us they beat Liverpool 4-0 and they had just won the league by 20 points,” he said.
“So they can do that to anyone. We’re just going to get back to what we were doing before the City game and hopefully we will be alright.”
Adam Webster heads clear during the first half at Villa Park.
A win against the Saints would be a huge step towards securing Premier League status next season.
“We’ve got three games left, but we’ve got to concentrate on Southampton first,” said Webster.
“If we could win, it will all but confirm that we will be playing Premier League football next year so there’s a big incentive for us.
“But it’s not done yet and we know that as players and as a club. We’re by no means on holiday and we will be working hard to get that win on Thursday to give us that bit more breathing space.”
It won’t be easy against a Southampton side unbeaten in five previous Premier League games against Albion and who have taken four points off the two Manchester clubs since the resumption.
Webster added, “Since the restart Southampton have kicked on – they’ve had some good results.
"They beat Manchester City and, having played them ourselves, we know how tough it’s going to be.
“They got a point against United as well, so they look in much better shape.
"At the start of the season and just before Christmas they were struggling a bit but they have really picked up and they look a really dangerous side. We will have to be right at the top of our game to get a result.”
