Webster: Margins are fine, but I’ve relished Premier League

Adam Webster says that his first season in the Premier League has taught him a lot.

The summer arrival from Bristol City, who has made 23 appearances in the top flight to date and scored three times, reflected honestly on the season so far as he prepares for Arsenal’s visit to the Amex on Saturday.

He said, “I knew [the Premier League] would be tough and the margins are fine because of how high the levels are. The team have drawn a lot of games that we could have easily won.

“You need a bit of luck as well and maybe at times this season, we haven’t had that, but we have nine games left and we’ll be doing everything we can to get results on the board.

“We’ve had some tough games, but I’ve enjoyed the challenges of the division.”

The Seagulls kept their first clean sheet of 2020 at Wolves last weekend, and the defender believes that gives Graham Potter’s men plenty to build on in the weeks ahead.

“Last weekend was a really important clean sheet. We limited them to very few chances and they are probably one of the toughest sides we’ve faced so far this season.

“It was massive to keep them out and it’s big for the confidence of the team. It is something we can build on going into the last part of the season.”

Webster scored his second goal for the club when Albion were 2-1 winners over this weekend’s opponents back in December at the Emirates.

He was also on target against Aston Villa in October as well as scoring against Tottenham on Boxing Day, meaning all three of his goals have come on the road.

“We played really well that night [at Arsenal]. They came out strong at the start of the second half, but we turned that around to get a win.

“Personally, it was one of the most special moments of my career so far. As a defender you want to keep clean sheets but when you score you have to cherish and enjoy it.

“That’s been the only game we’ve got something from when I’ve scored so it does feel a bit more significant and enjoyable.”

The 25-year-old stressed how important the supporters will be when Mikel Arteta’s men visit the Amex this weekend. Albion are unbeaten in their last four meetings with the Gunners.

“The fans are massive for us. It gives us a little bit extra and helps to put the opposition under pressure, it’s the same when we go away from home and have to face the same thing.

“It’s important we stick together. The way we try to play takes patience to find the right openings. We’ll just keep doing our best between now and the end of the season and I’m sure we can give them something to cheer about.”
