So close
Had Danny Ings found the back of the net instead of hitting the woodwork this campaign he would top the Premier League goalscoring charts. The former Liverpool forward has smacked the post or crossbar five times, just a single time less than Marcus Rashford who tops that table of near misses. With 19 goals, this is Ings’ highest scoring season since 2014, when he netted 21 Championship goals for Burnley.
Big defeat, big turnaround
The well documented 9-0 home defeat to Leicester City played a big part in the turnaround of Southampton’s season. After 12 games and following a 2-1 home defeat to Everton they found themselves three points adrift with eight points. But 45 points after 35 games is now their best Premier League points return since 2015/16.
Life’s easier on the road
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side seem to prefer playing away from St Mary’s this season, having now picked up eight wins on the road, compared to five at home. The Saints have the second worst home record in the division, having picked up just 17 points. Only Norwich have secured fewer points in their own stadium.
Don’t do draws
Just six of Southampton’s 35 league games have ended in draws this season. At home, they have half the average draw rate in the league – 12% compared to the 24% average.
Tidy
James Ward-Prowse has recently taken the armband from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. The England international is the engine in the Saints midfield and not only is he deadly from set-pieces, he is also fantastic in possession, only being dispossessed on 19 occasions all season. To put that into perspective, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has played two fewer matches but has given up the ball ten more times.
