A warm welcome to Steve Bruce, and the players and officials of Newcastle United for tonight's game at the Amex
Last Sunday's win at Southampton was really pleasing for us all, and gave us a vital three points. I was particularly pleased for the players, who produced another strong performance.
We know we haven't always had something to show for our efforts this season, but we deserved the win after an excellent and professional performance at St Mary's.
I know our supporters will have enjoyed watching the win at home. While our fans haven't been at matches, the support we've felt from them in different ways has been crucial. That ongoing support will only give added motivation as we enter the final stretch of the season.
We have ten games left to play and it’s important we focus on the job we have to do. We know what is required, and we also know how quickly things can turn around in the Premier League.
We can’t worry about those around us; we can only focus on what we do and strive to pick up the necessary number of points.
Naturally, the atmosphere has been good around the squad this week, boosted further by Robert Sanchez’s call-up to the senior Spain squad. It’s a tremendous achievement and well deserved given his performances since he came into the team.
Rob will be the first to admit that he still has much to learn, but if he continues in the same manner, he can go a long way for both club and country.
Elsewhere around the club, it was fantastic to see Hope Powell win the WSL Manager of the Month award for February.
After an indifferent spell, the team have had some excellent results of late – namely consecutive wins against Chelsea, West Ham and Spurs – and the squad have certainly benefited from Hope’s managerial know-how. Along with her coaching staff, she’s doing an excellent job.
It should also be noted the recent good form of Mark Beard's under-18 side has continued; they have now won five consecutive league games – most recently against Leicester last Saturday.
Finally, tonight we again want to make it abundantly clear that discrimination, in any form, anywhere, is wholly unacceptable and we stand alongside the Premier League with their 'No Room For Racism' message.
In light of recent incidents on social media, it's important to show that we will not stand still on this important issue and I know that our club will continue to work very hard to address all prejudiced behaviour.
Enjoy the game.
