Hope Powell has praised the tremendous 'team effort' that helped Albion claim their highest position in the Women's Super League.
Sunday's 3-1 win at home to Bristol City meant they finished sixth in their third season in the top flight of women’s football, having finished ninth in the previous two campaigns.
They also won more games (8) than the previous two seasons combined (7), although six matches were not played last season when it was cut short because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition, Albion were the only team to beat champions Chelsea and they were one of only four teams to take points off runners-up Manchester City.
“We've had a really good season and I must say it has been a real team effort,” said Powell. “The players that have started, those who have finished games and the players that are injured on a matchday, they have all played their part in where we have finished and I'm really pleased for them and the club.”
Dutch international Inessa Kaagman was top scorer with eight goals while South Korean Lee Geum-Min finished with three in her last two matches, and both were on target against Bristol City.
“Until the Reading game last week Lee hadn’t scored all season so I’m really pleased for her. Every game she plays she has got better,” said Powell. “Obviously Inessa has scored a lot of goals for us this season which has been crucial, but others have chipped in, like I said a real team effort.”
Albion have one game to play when they entertain Huddersfield Town on Sunday in the fifth round of the FA Cup at the People’s Pension Stadium (12 noon).
“We're looking to finish the season strongly and progress to the quarter-finals but we won’t be taking Huddersfield for granted at all. They have had a really good season and we know they will approach the game with nothing to lose so it will need a professional performance from us,” said Powell.
