Graham Potter says beating some of the Premier League's biggest teams will count for little when Newcastle United visit the Amex on Saturday.
Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Southampton have all been defeated since the turn of the year and although keen to maintain the momentum from last Sunday's win at St Mary's, the head coach knows that form will have little bearing against the Magpies.
“It's not as simple as just carrying on the momentum because there's an opponent that wants to take the points as well.
“We've come through a frustrating period where results haven't gone our way and we had an important win against Southampton. We've shown we're capable of winning games, but we want to try and back that up against Newcastle on Saturday night.
“It's going to be a really difficult game, Newcastle are a team that's improved recently. They've got a clear idea about what they're trying to do, tactically they're very organised, they use the counter-attack well with Joelinton and whether it's [Ryan] Fraser, [Joe] Willock or [Dwight] Gayle up front as well they've got some options there.
“They have got players that have won games at this level. As always with Steve Bruce's teams, they find a way to win and to get results. They'll be competitive and they are a tough team to play.”
At this stage of the season points are more important than performances, according to Potter.
“The most pleasurable thing is getting the result. You need to decide how you play and the longevity of that in terms of developing the players, the team and the club, but you can never lose sight of what the most important thing which is the points.
“In football it's about scoring one more goal than the opponent and we hadn't done that well enough in the three or four games before Southampton. Previous to that we had a good run, but in this league the margins are small and you can be heavily punished when you drop your level a little bit.”
