At this stage of the season it’s all about taking points, according to the head coach, who is hoping his side can build on last Saturday’s rousing response against West Ham when they hit back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3.
He said, “The talk about our ‘style’ has been something external. I’ve always spoken about the importance of finding the balance between defence and attack to get results.
“We haven’t quite found it to the maximum, so we are able to get consistent results, but we’re certainly not far away.
“It depends on where your bar is and where your reality of where Brighton should be is. Whatever people expect or want is something I can’t control – my job is to get results in a way which we can build and go forward with.
“Would I complain if we’ve not played so well and won the game today? Absolutely not.”
Albion go into the game in 15th and although the head coach says he is enjoying the challenge of being a Premier League manager, he recognises the narrow margins between success and failure.
“The Premier League is so competitive, and the margins are so small,” he added. “That in itself is a new experience although I had times managing in Sweden with Ostersunds when we were looking down more than up, so I have been through that experience.
“Everyone would like to win more games but if I can’t deal with the tough times and the struggles then I shouldn’t be here.”
Glenn Murray scored a late equaliser against West Ham and Potter praised the qualities of the striker, who he believes can have a key role during the remaining 13 games of the season after signing a new contract earlier this week.
“In hindsight everyone’s wise after the event. We’ve had times where we’ve used Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly, and therefore not Glenn as much,” said Potter.
“But he’s hungry and can hit the last 13 matches and help us in a big way. In my job you can’t be in denial, you have to be honest enough to accept a different way of thinking sometimes that can help you improve and go forward - that’s the approach I’ve always taken in my career.
“Glenn is an experienced player and he’s seen a lot. Now it’s about focusing on the job but the more people you have with experience of a difficult situation the better.”
