Graham Potter admits that making sure players stay faithful to his way of playing is crucial even when results don’t reflect performances.
Albion got plenty of praise for the way they played against Manchester United last Saturday, but they still lost 3-2.
“That's the biggest challenge,” said the head coach ahead of today’s trip to Everton. “We are in a results business and results can fluctuate quite quickly.
“It is the same for old and young players. They want to feel that they are improving and what they are doing gives them a chance to play to their maximum. It gets more demanding when you don’t win so much because good results are clearly the thing that convinces everybody that what you are doing is right – that’s the fun bit of the job.”
Tariq Lamptey, Steven Alzate are two players who have caught the eye in the first few weeks of the season and helping youngsters improve gives Potter great satisfaction.
“The best bit about coaching is when a player you work with reaches their potential and develops. Seeing the difference you can make in a player is the best bit, that whole thing when you see someone do something that they maybe didn't think they were capable of themselves.
“Winning matches is part of that development process, just as losing is, unfortunately. That is not what people want to hear, but suffering is a part of how you grow as a person and a player.”
