A warm welcome back to the Amex Stadium for the visit of Leeds United.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Jesse Marsch, his staff and players this afternoon. It can take time to impose an identity on a team, certainly at this level, but it’s clear to see from this season’s early results that Jesse is already making his mark on his side. We know Leeds will be difficult opponents today and will provide a tough challenge – as they always do.
From our point of view, we’ll be looking to build on what has, overall, been a really good start to the season. Last time out at the Amex I don’t think anyone present would have argued against us taking all three points against a very good Newcastle side. We created a number of chances that, on another day, would have produced a win. As it was, we had to settle for the draw, but I was very pleased with the performance.
Last Sunday we faced a West Ham team who will again be pushing hard for European football, but we got the points this time that our performance deserved. Our opening goal proved important and from that moment on we grew into the game. To score two goals and keep a clean sheet away from home in the Premier League is never easy, so it was a very happy changing room after the game.
On Wednesday evening, we switched our attentions to the Carabao Cup, which, after a busy start to the season, provided the opportunity to give a number of our younger players game time, alongside those senior squad members who haven’t seen as much action as others in the first three Premier League games, and I was really pleased with the professional performance from all involved. We produced three excellent goals, a controlled display, and when we needed to dig in against a resolute and well organised Forest Green side we did just that.
Enjoy the game,
Graham.
