Evan Ferguson was delighted to score his first senior goal against Forest Green on Wednesday and wants to impress again when more first-team opportunities come his way.

The 17-year-old opened his Albion account with a well-taken finish in the final minute of his full debut, having made substitute appearances in the FA Cup and Premier League at the start of the year.

It’s been a rapid rise for the teenager from Dublin, but having had a taste of first-team football he wants more.

“When I’m in the first-team squad, I want to make the most of every opportunity I’m given and always try my best.” said Ferguson.

“Cup games are a good experience for us young lads. It’s men’s football and you need to get used to playing under the lights and in front of crowds – and getting a bit of stick.

“I was delighted to get my goal and the game gave me another feel of the first team, which was great. Now I need to keep my standards up and push on to get more.”

Wednesday’s Carabao Cup victory was Ferguson’s third senior Albion appearance, after his impressive cameo against West Brom in January and his Premier League bow against Burnley a month later.

He’s been training with the first team since and revealed what Graham Potter has been telling him as he continues to settle into his senior surroundings.

“The manager told me to keep trying my best and to make sure I’ve worked hard to get the best out of myself when I get opportunities," he added. "That’s what I’ll try to do if I get the chance again.”

Those opportunities at this stage of Ferguson’s career seem to be in the cup competitions, and the striker is already looking ahead to our third-round tie at Arsenal in November.

“Cup games give me an opportunity to impress and builds momentum in the team.” said the Irishman. “We’re in this competition to win it and we don’t see why we don’t have a chance. It will be great to put a run together.”
