Men’s under-18s head coach Arthur Brammer says his team’s game against Chelsea on Saturday will reveal a lot about his squad after their defeat to Leicester City last weekend.
Having won two and drawn two of their four Premier League South games in 2023, last Saturday’s loss to the Foxes went down as their first league defeat of the year.
“We had a good run of results in February and some good performances,” Brammer reflected. “In the first half against Leicester we did well, but going a goal down in the opening two minutes is not the way we want to start games.
“The second half performance showed some complacency though and we got punished against a strong Leicester side. We’ve had a good working week and we’re excited about going to Chelsea.
“Since the FA Cup defeat to Manchester City we’ve had some decent performances – every team will have a blip and hopefully Leicester was ours and we can get back to winning. It’ll be a good test of our character against Chelsea.”
Brammer did have the opportunity to give a number of under-15s and 16s a chance in his team though.
Under-15 Harry Howell and under-16 Layth Gulzar played the full 90 minutes against Leicester, while under-15 Will Rutter was named on the bench for the first time.
“We were young against Leicester, there was a lot going on in the academy last weekend. We had the under-16s go to PSG and win 2-1.

“That meant there was a fantastic opportunity for players in that age group, so we had to be careful with who we chose to bring up. We had to make sure we were strong, but there was a lot of movement and the team had a different look to it.
“Several under-16s and under-15s were in our squad, there was a lot of opportunities for the younger ones to show what they can do. Every cloud has a silver lining and those opportunities were it.”
