We are saddened to report the passing of former centre-half Alex South at the age of 93.
A member of a well-known Brighton football family – his brothers Billy and Eric were also associated with the Albion – Alex joined the club’s groundstaff in 1946, aged 15, and went on to make his debut in a 0-0 draw against Exeter City in April 1950.
An impressive performer at Division Three South level, he made 85 appearances for the club – playing regularly in the 1953/54 season in which Albion finished runners-up – before making way for record signing Matt McNeil.
In December 1954, ex-Albion manager Don Welsh signed his former stopper for Liverpool in a £5,000 deal, but Alex was to play only seven league and cup games at Anfield before moving to Halifax Town in October 1956.
His switch across the Pennines proved to be a great success and he went on to make 306 league appearances, the most of any player at the time for the Yorkshire club.
We extend our condolences to Alex’s family and friends at this sad time.
