A 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Saturday saw Albion knocked out of the Premier League Under-18s Cup.
Arthur Brammer’s team headed into the affair knowing a win would see them through to the knockout stages, but the Blades struck twice in the final ten minutes to bring an end to our journey in this season’s competition.
An opening group game defeat to Palace followed by a 4-0 win over Leeds United had given the under-18s hope of progressing.
“We had spoken about playing our way and we showed that in the first half at times,” Brammer reflected. “We had some really good opportunities, arguably we could have gone in at the break in the lead.
“But in the second half Sheffield United disrupted the way we wanted to play, their game plan worked, they pressed us hard, they fought well and we lacked a bit of bravery at times. It’s disappointing to go out.
Arthur Brammer's team are back in action later this week in the Premier League Under-17s Cup.
“We want to compete and play in the latter stages of all competitions we enter. A positive was we showed our identity in the first half and we look at areas where we can improve going into our upcoming league games.”
A quick turnaround in cup competitions sees Albion play in the Premier League Under-17s Cup on Wednesday when we take on Crystal Palace.
Having lost to Charlton Athletic in the opening group game, Brammer knows his team needs a win to give them the best chance of going through, before facing Southampton in the final group match.
“It was a great achievement to win the competition two years ago, but it doesn’t have a bearing on how we go about our work.
“It’s a competition we want to do well in and a game we’re looking forward to. There will be opportunities for a couple of under-16s to be in the squad and see how we work.”
