Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s were beaten 3-0 in the Premier League Cup today, as Chelsea ran out winners at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

The Seagulls were unable to build on their 3-2 win over Newcastle United in the competition last time out, as goals from Daishawn Redan, Marc Guehi and Charlie Brown sealed victory for the Blues.

Chelsea’s starting line-up included a handful of England’s under-17 World Cup winning squad, and George McEachran, who featured in the 5-2 victory over Spain, provided a creative spark inside the opening exchanges.

The midfielder’s floated cross was met by Brown inside Albion’s penalty area, but the striker’s header sailed wide of the target, before he then dragged a shot past George Bentley’s goal.

Billy Gilmour was then denied by an important block in front of goal, before Alex Cochrane fashioned Albion’s first chance of the game, as he forced Chelsea goalkeeper Karlo Ziger into a fine save.

Bentley produced a good save to prevent McEachran from breaking the deadlock, but he could do nothing about Redan’s strike moments later, as the striker’s powerful close-range effort found the back of the net.

Just a couple of minutes later, and shortly before half-time, the Blues doubled their lead through Guehi, one of the goalscorers in England’s famous victory in India, as he prodded home from Conor Gallagher’s flick-on.

Ian Buckman’s team made a confident start of the break, with Ryan Longman threatening down the flank, but his low-driven effort went narrowly wide of the bottom corner.

Morrison then crossed from the byline and his delivery looked to be causing problems inside the danger zone, but Ziger did well to palm the ball away, before Longman had another chance and headed wide of the target.

But Redan continued to hassle Albion’s backline and the forward teed up his strike partner Brown in the 58th minute, crossing low into the penalty area for the 18-year-old to prod home from a matter of yards.

Albion almost grabbed a late consolation after an uneventful second-half spell, but Tariq Lamptey was on hand to clear the ball off the line after Ziger failed to hold onto Longman’s dangerous delivery.

Chelsea saw out the remaining minutes to claim all three points of the south coast, and the sides will meet again in the league after the international break.

ALBION: Bentley; Morrison, Shihab, Roberts, Kone (Tutt 82); Longman, Cochrane, Araujo, Hutchinson (Ibeh 77); Ljubicic, Cashman (Onen 66).
