Three To Remember: Wolves
Brighton & Hove Albion boast an impressive record against this weekend’s visitors Wolverhampton Wanderers, having won 14 of the 30 meetings between the clubs over the years. The Seagulls recorded nine successive victories over the West Midlands club between 1979 and 1989, but here are three matches since the millennium that have also seen Albion come out on top. Albion 4 Wolves 1 - 8th February 2003 After holding Wolves to a 1-1 draw at Molineux earlier in the season, thanks to Bobby Zamora’s delicate chip in front of the Sky Sports cameras, Albion welcomed Dave Jones’s side to the Withdean Stadium. The visitors sat sixth in the First Division, while Albion were fighting to get out of the relegation zone, but Steve Coppell’s team produced a memorable display to cause an upset on the south coast. The Seagulls raced into a 3-0 lead after goals from Zamora, Dean Blackwell and Paul Brooker, but Kenny Miller replied in the 65th minute to give the visiting supporters hope. It was short-lived as Gary Hart found the back of the net two minutes later to make it 4-1, and Albion saw out the remainder of the game to seal an eye-catching win against Wolves, who ended up winning promotion through the play-offs. Albion 2 Wolves 0 - 4th May 2013 Having already secured their play-off spot, Albion welcomed Dean Saunders and his team to the Amex Stadium on the final day of the 2012/13 Championship season. The Seagulls were eight matches unbeaten and they managed to extend that run with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Wolves, while also condemning the West Midlands club to relegation. It took just five minutes for Kazenga LuaLua to put Albion ahead, as he cut inside onto his right foot and powerfully fired into the bottom corner from 25 yards. The winger bagged his brace with another solo effort before the break, and the Seagulls continued their fine run of form leading into the play-off semi-finals. Wolves 0 Albion 2 - 14th April 2017 A hat-trick of victories pushed Albion closer towards promotion to the Premier League - a run of games which included a first victory at Queens Park Rangers since 1957. Chris Hughton’s team went in search of another three points in front of the Sky Sports cameras, and two clinical finishes from Anthony Knockaert strengthened Albion’s position at the top of the league. The Frenchman latched onto a long ball forward from David Stockdale, before cutting inside onto his left foot and firing into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area. An Albion break was then finished off by the winger, following great work from Jamie Murphy and Glenn Murray, and the Seagulls travelled home with another three points leading into their promotion-clinching game against Wigan Athletic.
